The Karnataka High Court has strongly criticised the police for registering a criminal case against a man who allegedly exposed illegal immigrants instead of taking action against those accused of staying in the country unlawfully.
Hearing the petition filed by Nagendrappa T,alias Nagendra,a Single Judge Bench of Justice M. Nagaprasanna questioned the police’s approach and warned that inaction against illegal immigration could pose a serious threat to national security.
The Court observed that illegal immigrants were “increasing like mushrooms”and remarked that those who report such issues should not be targeted while alleged offenders go unpunished.
Expressing concern over the issue,the Bench orally observed:
“Do not merely make speeches.First,ensure that this (illegal immigration) is brought under control. What is the Home Department doing? Is it busy delivering speeches on other issues?”.
The observations came during the hearing of Nagendrappa’s petition challenging the criminal case registered against him in connection with allegedly exposing illegal immigrants.The matter remains under consideration before the High Court.
