In an incident that has embarrassed the police department,a CID police inspector is among three persons accused of robbing a group of Kerala youths of Rs.20 lakh in Bengaluru’s Madiwala area.
Senior officer told reporters that, the accused include a CID inspector and two associates identified as Upendra and Kumar.
The trio allegedly intercepted the victims near a private hotel in Madiwala and posed as police officers.
To make the operation appear genuine,the accused reportedly used an official CID police jeep and displayed police identity cards.
They allegedly questioned the youths about money meant for trading activities and accused them of carrying illegal funds.
When the youths refused to hand over the cash,the accused allegedly assaulted and intimidated them before forcibly taking Rs.20 lakh,officer said.
Suspecting foul play,the victims secretly recorded videos of the incident.After realising they had been cheated, they approached the Madiwala Police Station and lodged a complaint.
Based on the complaint,a case has been registered and an investigation launched under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mohammed Sujeetha.Police have already arrested one suspect in connection with the case.
Sources said that soon after the FIR was registered,the CID inspector switched off his mobile phone and went absconding.
Investigators have seized the police jeep allegedly used in the robbery and are continuing efforts to trace the remaining accused.
