Tamil Nadu Guns for 2029 National Games;Proposes Mega Sports Hubs Across Districts

In a major push to transform Tamil Nadu into India’s premier sporting destination,the state government has officially submitted a comprehensive memorandum to the Centre,staking its claim to host the 2029 National Games.

On the directions of Chief Minister Thiru.C.Joseph Vijay, the State Minister for Public Works,Highways,and Sports Development,Thiru.Aadhav Arjuna,met with the Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr.Mansukh Mandaviya,in New Delhi to pitch a massive blueprint for sports infrastructure development.

The ambitious initiative aligns with the Chief Minister’s dual vision:channeling youth energy constructively to achieve a “Drug-Free Tamil Nadu”and building a robust ecosystem to propel India into a global sports superpower capable of dominating the Olympics, Paralympics,and Asian Games.

Decentralizing Sports:A Blueprint for the Future.
The memorandum presents a series of landmark, high-tech proposals strategically distributed across various districts to decentralize talent development:

• Combat & Beach Sports:A National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) for Combat Sports is slated for the upcoming 48-acre Trichy Olympic Academy.

Leveraging the state’s 1,076 km coastline,Nagapattinam has been proposed as the ideal home for an NCoE for Beach Sports.

• Cycling Velodrome in Coimbatore:Recognizing the region’s strong cycling base,the state plans to build an international-standard,UCI-compliant Indoor Cycling Velodrome alongside a National Cycling High-Performance Centre.

• Athletics & Aquatics:To hunt for regional talent, international-standard 400m synthetic tracks are proposed for Pudukkottai,Thoothukudi,Villupuram, Tiruvallur,and Krishnagiri.

Furthermore,world-class Olympic-Standard Aquatic Complexes are planned for Coimbatore,Chengalpattu, Tiruvarur,and Tiruppur.

• Indoor Stadiums & Climbing:New multipurpose indoor stadiums will target youth participation in Kallakurichi, Tirunelveli, Ranipet,and Cuddalore.

Meanwhile,Chennai is set to get an International Sport Climbing Centre to nurture future Olympic medal potential.

Focus on Sports Science and Clean Culture
The proposal goes beyond physical infrastructure by prioritizing athlete health,research, and ethics.

Chennai has been earmarked for a National Anti-Doping Education and Awareness Centre to act as a research and capacity-building hub in collaboration with the National Anti-Doping Agency.

Additionally,a National Sports Science,Sports Medicine, Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre is proposed for Madurai to offer integrated recovery and performance optimization services to athletes nationwide.

To widen the grassroots pipeline,the state requested an expansion of the Khelo India ecosystem,ensuring that at least two priority sports disciplines are covered in every single district of Tamil Nadu.

Union Minister Dr.Mansukh Mandaviya highly appreciated the proactive efforts of the Tamil Nadu government and assured full Central support and cooperation to bring these plans to fruition.

The high-profile meeting was also attended by key administrative officials,including Youth Welfare and Sports Development Secretary, Thiru.
