-Project proposed following repeated requests from residents and park users.
-Focus on odour control, potable-water conservation and treated-water reuse.
-Tender currently under scrutiny and evaluation.
Responding to repeated requests from local residents, walkers and park users, the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has moved to establish a 1 MLD decentralised Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) near Tavarekere Park.
A significant quantity of sewage currently flows through the stormwater drain near the park.
Local residents and park users have raised concerns over the resulting foul odour, fly nuisance and unhygienic conditions. The proposed project is intended to provide a long-term solution to these issues.
Under the proposal, sewage flowing through the drain will be intercepted and treated at the 1 MLD STP in accordance with the quality standards prescribed by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB).
This will reduce the quantity of wastewater flowing through the drain and improve sanitation and environmental conditions in and around the park.
Potable water is currently being used to maintain the park’s trees and landscaped areas. The treated water generated by the proposed plant will be used for gardening and landscaping, thereby reducing the consumption of potable water.
Surplus treated water may also be used for construction activities, landscaping, road and premises washing, and other suitable non-potable requirements in surrounding areas.
Key benefits of the proposed project include:
-A cleaner and healthier environment for residents and park users.
-Interception and treatment of sewage flowing through the drain.
-Reduction of foul odour, fly nuisance and unhygienic conditions.
-Environmental rejuvenation of the park and surrounding areas.
-Conservation of potable water currently used for landscaping.
-Productive reuse of treated wastewater.
-Reduction of untreated sewage entering downstream drains and water bodies.
Once implemented, the project can help transform Thavarekere Park into a self-sustaining urban model for wastewater treatment, water conservation, environmental rejuvenation and treated-water reuse.
The tender process is currently at the scrutiny and evaluation stage.BWSSB stated that the process will be completed transparently and expeditiously in accordance with the applicable rules and tender conditions.
