A government official deputed for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was allegedly assaulted while on duty in Bengaluru’s DJ Halli area on Wednesday, leading to the registration of an FIR against four persons.
According to the FIR registered by Devarajeevanahalli Police,the complainant,Pakeerappa (37),a superintendent with the Slum Board and Development Department,had been appointed as the supervising officer for 11 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) carrying out the SIR process in Ward No. 47 of Pulakeshinagar Assembly constituency.
The incident occurred around 1.30 pm on July 29 near Kousar Masjid,18th Cross,Roshan Nagar,DJ Halli,when the official was inspecting the ongoing SIR work.
The FIR states that two youths,identified as Yarab (A1) and Dastagir (A2),allegedly picked an argument with a BLO after being told to collect their SIR form from Jayanagar,where they claimed to be residing.
When Pakeerappa intervened and questioned why they were creating a disturbance,one of the accused allegedly asked,”Who are you to question us?”before punching him in the mouth,causing his lip to bleed.
The second accused allegedly assaulted him by punching him near the eyebrow and hitting him on the back.Members of the public intervened and separated the parties.
The injured official informed his superiors,received treatment at Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Hospital,and later lodged a complaint at Devarajeevanahalli Police Station.
Police have registered a case against Yarab,Dastagir, Iqbal (A3),and another unidentified person (A4) under Sections 121(1) (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty),132 (assault or criminal force against a public servant),352, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.Further investigation is underway.
