Bengaluru district police have registered a case against a group of pro-Hindu activists for allegedly assaulting two Bangladeshi nationals while purportedly verifying their identity documents in a labourers’ colony in Chokkanahalli village under the Nandagudi Police Station limits.
Senior officer told reporters that the activists visited the colony on Friday,claiming that several Bangladeshi nationals were living there illegally.
During the visit,they allegedly assaulted two individuals, checked their documents and mobile phones,and recorded the entire episode on video,which was later circulated on social media.
The activists also alleged that some undocumented immigrants were paying“protection money”to police personnel who regularly visited the colony.
They claimed to have found contact numbers of certain police personnel in the mobile phones of the detained individuals.
Based on a complaint,police registered a case of assault against the activists.
The two Bangladeshi nationals identified as Bilal and Rafi were taken into custody and handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for further legal proceedings,including deportation,if found to be in the country illegally.
Taking serious note of the allegations involving police personnel,senior police officials have ordered a departmental inquiry into the claims and stated that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if any misconduct is established.
Police said further investigation into both the assault case and the allegations against police personnel is underway.
