East Division police of Shivajinagar police have arrested five persons after Leader of the Opposition R.Ashoka lodged a complaint with City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh alleging that Congress workers attacked BJP leaders during a protest near the KPCC office on Wednesday.
Acting on the complaint,the Shivajinagar Police registered a criminal case in connection with the incident. Police said five accused have been identified and arrested,while further investigation is underway.
In his complaint,Ashoka alleged that Congress party workers assaulted BJP leaders using lathis and iron rods and pelted eggs at them as they marched towards the KPCC office to stage a protest.
He claimed that several BJP leaders,including Jayanagar MLA C.K.Ramamurthy,sustained injuries in the attack.
Ashoka further alleged that after police detained the BJP leaders and escorted them in a bus to the High Grounds Police Station,the agitated crowd attacked the vehicle and continued pelting eggs, further escalating tensions.
One of the targeted leaders was BJP MLA B.P.Harish, who was walking from Cantonment towards the KPCC office to join fellow party leaders when he was allegedly pelted with eggs by protesters raising slogans.
Police personnel deployed at the spot struggled to control the crowd and prevent the situation from worsening.
In a statement,Bengaluru City Police said no individual or organisation would be permitted to take the law into their own hands or violate the directions of the Hon’ble High Court.
The police warned that any person or group resorting to unlawful protests, violence or disruption of public order anywhere in Bengaluru,other than at the designated protest venue at Freedom Park, would face strict legal action irrespective of political affiliation.
The police reiterated their commitment to maintaining public order and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld attend all times.
