Surprise inspection by Central prison authorities led to seizures of prohibited items including SIM card, tobacco,and narcotic substances

A surprise search at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison led to the seizure of prohibited items,including a SIM card,tobacco and a suspected narcotic substance, resulting in the registration of a fresh case against an undertrial inmate and others.

According to the complaint,prison officials conducted an unannounced inspection of Tower-1,Barrack No.1,Room No.5,on Tuesday by Assistant Jailer Dileep Hangargi.

During the search,officials recovered one VI SIM card from the room.

Later,acting on specific intelligence,the prison staff intercepted undertrial prisoner Shivakumar alias Kalla Shiva near the HOPCOMS room in Tower-01.

A search of his person allegedly led to the recovery of one VI SIM card,around 160 grams of tobacco,and about 210 grams of a white semi-solid substance wrapped in black tape, suspected to be a narcotic or other prohibited material.

During questioning,Shivakumar allegedly told prison officials that he had spoken to his friend Uday through the prison call system and was informed that a man identified as Manjunath had thrown the prohibited articles into the prison premises from outside on July 13.

Based on the complaint,prison authorities have sought the registration of a case against Shivakumar alias Kalla Shiva,Uday,Manjunath,and other unidentified persons who allegedly smuggled, facilitated or used the prohibited articles inside the prison.

The case has been registered under Section 42 of the Karnataka Prisons (Amendment) Act,2022,along with Section 323 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS),2023, and other applicable provisions.

The seized articles were sealed in the presence of Assistant Superintendent Shivanand Shivapur and handed over to the police for further investigation.
