A 40-year-old woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances inside her rented room at Muniyappa Layout in Hongasandra under the Bommanahalli police station limits.
The deceased has been identified as Krishna Barman (40),a native of west Bengal who was living alone and working as a cook.
According to police,neighbours noticed that the door to her room had remained closed for an unusually long time and alerted the police late on Sunday night.
Officers broke open the door and found Krishna Barman dead inside the room.
Police suspect that she may have been smothered to death by someone known to her, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the postmortem examination.
The body has been shifted to a government hospital for autopsy.Police are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area and questioning local residents to identify the suspect and establish the motive behind the murder.
