A vice-president of the Bengaluru West District Congress Committee has lodged a complaint with the High Grounds Police Station against Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna, alleging that he made provocative, defamatory and threatening remarks during a recent public meeting in Udupi.

According to the complaint, the MLA allegedly made objectionable statements targeting Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and the Gandhi family.

The complainant alleged that videos and media reports of the speech show the MLA using derogatory language and making remarks capable of promoting hatred and disturbing public peace.

The complaint further alleges that the MLA made an unsubstantiated claim that Rahul Gandhi was”a drug addict”and also made statements suggesting that,”just as the Babri Masjid was demolished,Rahul Gandhi’s lineage would be wiped out,”which the complainant described as inflammatory and threatening.

Stating that such remarks by an elected representative are a matter of serious concern, the complainant contended that the speech could incite fear, hatred, enmity and public unrest.

The complaint also said that while political differences are a part of democracy, speeches allegedly promoting violence, hatred or intimidation against individuals or political leaders warrant legal scrutiny.

The complainant has urged the High Grounds Police to register a case and initiate appropriate legal action against the MLA in accordance with the law after examining the available video footage and other evidence.
