Member of the Karnataka State Police Complaints Authority Mohan Kumar Danappa has written to the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP),recommending changes to the uniforms of lower-rung police personnel by replacing metal whistle chains and buttons with rust-resistant alternatives.

In a letter Authority member Mohan Kumar Danappa said the earlier replacement of the traditional British-era police cap with navy blue peaked caps had been well received by personnel and had improved their comfort, particularly during summer.

He pointed out that the metal whistle chains and buttons currently used on uniforms are prone to rusting due to weather conditions, causing stains on uniforms and potentially leading to skin ailments and other health issues.

Danappa noted that several states have already replaced metal whistle chains with khaki- or blue-coloured whistle guards and introduced matte-finish buttons to overcome these issues.

He urged the police department to consider adopting similar accessories for Karnataka Police personnel.

He requested the DG&IGP to examine the proposal in accordance with the rules and provide whistle guards matching the navy blue peaked cap, or any colour chosen by the department, along with matte-finish buttons, keeping in mind the health and welfare of police personnel.
