SWR Observes World Environment Day 2026; GM Calls for “Now for Climate”Action

South Western Railway joined the global community in observing World Environment Day 2026,reaffirming its strong commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible operations.

On the occasion,an Environment Day pledge was administered to all officers and staff.

The General Manager of South Western Railway,P Ananth noted that this year’s theme,“Inspired by Nature for Climate for Our Future,”holds special relevance for the Railways,emphasizing that railway personnel are not just operators of infrastructure but custodians of one of the nation’s most environmentally sustainable modes of transport.

He highlighted that the daily decisions taken by railway professionals significantly influence both the economic growth and environmental well-being of the country.

Drawing inspiration from nature,he stressed the need for efficiency, seamless integration,and resilience in railway operations.

The General Manager highlighted South Western Railway’s key sustainability initiatives,including green infrastructure,full electrification,solar installations,and freight optimization by shifting bulk commodities from road to rail to reduce emissions.

He also emphasized zero-waste practices,water recycling,eco-friendly waste management,energy conservation,afforestation,and campaigns against single-use plastics and littering,along with energy-efficient upgrades across buildings.

He reiterated that sustainability must be embedded in daily operations and urged railway personnel to renew their commitment towards running trains that are faster, cleaner,and smarter while protecting the environment for future generations.

To mark the occasion,750 saplings were planted across SWR, Rama Mohana Reddy Additional General Manager, Krishnaraj K.K,Chief Mechanical Engineer (Environment), along with other Principal Heads of Departments,was present during the programme.

World Environment Day was also celebrated across the Hubballi,Bengaluru,and Mysuru Divisions.
