A case has been registered under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after BJP leader and former Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation Chairman Beluru Raghavendra Shetty (45) sustained grievous injuries when he allegedly fell into an uncovered drain in Bengaluru’s Dollars Colony.
According to the complaint,the incident occurred around 7:45 pm on July 17 while Shetty was walking towards his office on 80 Feet Road.
He allegedly fell into a six-foot-deep drain that had been opened for cleaning earlier in the day.
The complaint alleges that the approximately 15-metre stretch was left uncovered without barricades, warning signs,or adequate lighting.
In his complaint,Shetty named the contractor,the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Commissioner,Bengaluru Development Minister,Krishna Byre Gowda,and the local MLA, alleging negligence in failing to ensure basic safety measures at the civic work site.
Based on the complaint,Sanjaynagar police registered a case under Section 125 of the BNS and have initiated an investigation.
Shetty suffered multiple fractures in the fall.He was initially treated at Ramaiah Hospital before being shifted to Sparsh Hospital,where he underwent a four-hour surgery.
Doctors inserted two plates to stabilise fractures in his left leg,and he has reportedly been advised six months of bed rest.
Speaking from the hospital,Shetty alleged that the drain had been left completely exposed without any protective barricades.
He questioned the potential consequences had an ordinary citizen or child fallen into the pit and called for stricter enforcement of safety protocols during civic infrastructure works.Police said further investigation is underway.
