IIT Roorkee Director: Reverse migration if given opportunities

In IITs, in other higher educational institutions, the youth who go abroad after completing their studies will learn more there and return to India.

Acharya Kamal K. Pant, director of IIT Roorkee told

‘Enadu’  that youth who go abroad will return.

Hyderabad: IIT Roorkee Director Acharya Kamal K. Pant said that the youth who go abroad after completing their studies in IITs, other higher educational institutions, will learn more there and return to India. He spoke to ‘Eenadu’ when he came to Hyderabad to participate in the recent national conference held at IICT on ‘Energy, Environment and Catalysts for Sustainable Development’. On this occasion, he explained the effects of climate change, carbon emissions, energy consumption, encouragement for research, etc. The features are in his words..

Go abroad and learn..

After completing their higher education in IITs, youth are going abroad in search of better opportunities. There is nothing wrong with this. There one learns more and acquires knowledge. Not everyone stays there. There is reverse migration. If given opportunities..most of those who left will return to India after 10-15 years. Here they participate in different forms of setting up of organizations.

Alarming emissions.

The increase in greenhouse pollutant emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is alarming. If this is not reduced, global warming will further increase and lead to climate change. We are already seeing heavy rains and flash floods at times as the temperatures rise. Drought conditions are also being faced. Climate change is also responsible for landslides in areas like Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Uttarakhand and Wayanad.

Think about ‘Vritha’..

It is a fact that fuel consumption increases with population growth. But it is not right to use the resources arbitrarily. Actually, how much water, food, electricity we use…how much is wasted…people should think about this. There should be a change in society. With unnecessary consumption.. the resources in the process of producing these are depleted. Pollutant emissions are released. Shift to alternative energy sources for transportation.

Circular Economy..

It is important to ensure that CO2 does not enter the environment. It can be converted into fuel and chemicals. We call this circular economy. CO2 emissions are high in solid, liquid and gaseous wastes. These emissions are expected to rise to 3.9 gigatonnes by 2030, and should be cut by at least a third. Whatever process we develop should minimize polluting waste. Technology should be made available at affordable prices to work with less electricity. Scientists and researchers should keep this in mind.

Hydrogen instead of petrol

Regarding ways to absorb CO2 before it enters the atmosphere.. Hydrogen can be produced from biomass with agricultural waste. Can be used as fuel in vehicles. Farmers get additional income. For this, indigenous technologies should be developed. We are taking steps in this direction. Research institutes, industry and academia should work together. Hydrogen can be used instead of petrol and diesel which cause high CO2 emissions. There are solutions like Bio CNG. If the youth come forward and form seed organizations, there is a possibility of many changes.

Encouragement for research

Compared to America and China, allocations for research and development in our country are less. It has increased compared to the past. The government is encouraging women in this field. Steps have been taken to remove the gaps between industries and educational institutions. The new system of education is very favorable. Incentives like allocation of funds for setting up of seed companies have increased.
