Mahabalipuram:”Rajiv Gandhi was a great,visionary leader who created many leaders in this country.Paying respects to him as the Chief Minister of Karnataka is my duty,”stated Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
Shivakumar was speaking to the media on Thursday during his visit to the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial in Sriperumbudur.
“Today is Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary.I share an emotional connection with this memorial and have been visiting it continuously for the last 15 years.
When Jayalalithaa was the Chief Minister and this memorial was being built,I had the great opportunity to serve here.
The granite monolith installed at the memorial was brought from our quarry in Kanakapura,”he recalled.
“Sriperumbudur is the place where Rajiv Gandhi sacrificed his life for the nation.I came here to attend the South Indian Chief Ministers’ conference and made good use of this opportunity to visit the memorial,”he added.
Rajiv Gandhi Had Immense Faith in the Nation’s Youth:
“The youth of this country can never forget Rajiv Gandhi. To ensure that young people and students could elect their representatives from the Panchayat to the Parliament, he lowered the voting age to 18.
That reflected the faith Rajiv Gandhi had in the country’s youth.We are all shaped by his thoughts, and it is our duty to carry his legacy forward,”he said.
Rajiv Gandhi’s Ideology and Leadership Remain Alive:
“I visited this place with Rahul Gandhi before the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Every year, the Rajiv Jyoti is brought here from Karnataka and taken to Delhi.Though Rajiv Gandhi is no longer with us physically, his ideology and leadership remain alive,” he said.
The Gandhi Family Has Led the Country:
“Whether in power or not,the Gandhi family has led this country.The strength of the Congress is the strength of the nation.
The history of Congress is the history of the nation.The bond between Congress and the Gandhi family is eternal.
There is no match for the contribution this family has made to the nation.Jawaharlal Nehru,Indira Gandhi,and Rajiv Gandhi made immense sacrifices for the country.
Visiting this place on behalf of Karnataka state and as a Congressman of this country is my duty,”he stated.

Responding to a media query regarding Tamil Nadu leader Vijay being projected as a prime ministerial candidate, the Chief Minister said,”Instead of issuing political statements,leaders should focus on nation-building.
At the South Indian Chief Ministers’ conference, we raised the issue of delimitation.The united demand of all Southern states is that the upcoming delimitation process should be conducted based on the 1971 census data rather than recent demographic figures.
Politicians should prioritize the foundational work of nation-building instead of prematurely engaging in large-scale political debates.”
