n an effort to enhance accountability and transparency in patrolling system, the Bengaluru city police have begun installing dash cams (dashboard cameras) in all the Hoysala vehicles.
City police Commissioner B Dayananda said that the initiative is a next step in improvising in the system .
There are 241 Hoysala patrolling vehicles in the city which will be equipped with dash cams.Further, dash cams will be installed in vehicles of Police Inspectors and Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs), he said .
Installation of Dash Cams are apart from the mandatory body cameras worn by the hoysala staff which would record their actions minute to minute .
This will ensure transparency and accountability as the staff can have documentation of the action taken.
Dash cams can prove extremely useful in understanding the actual sequence of events unfolding on the roads, especially during law enforcement or public engagement situations.
The use of body-worn cameras has also become integral to urban policing, ensuring the authenticity of incidents and placing responsibility on police officers as well as the public.
They know they are under observation, which encourages responsible action,Mr.Dayananda, said .
These dashcams will enable real-time recording of events during patrols, providing valuable evidence for investigations and ensuring transparency in police interactions.
This initiative not only enhances public safety but also fosters greater transparency and accountability within the police department,”he said.
It may be recalled that the city police have upgraded the patrolling officer in charge from Head constable to Assistant Sub Inspector with a directions to carry the service weapon compulsorily which can be used in case of any eventuality.
Due to the upgraded technology and monitoring system at the command centre which is monitoring the movements of Hoysala round the clock, the response time has been achieved to 7 minutes now, a senior police officer at the command centre, said.
