The Cyber Crime officials of the Criminal investigation department on Monday arrested a 32-year-old BE graduate for hacking into government sites to misuse the information for personal gain.
The accused has been identified as,Dilip Raje gowda, 32 years,BE Graduate,a habitual offender having cases of cyber crimes in various parts of karnataka,Maharashtra,Goa and Telangana.
Senior officer said,The accused would hack into government websites and website of IT department to access sensitive information and siphoned off huge amounts of money related to IT refunds from Income Tax Department into the impersonating bank accounts of original assessee.
Based on a complaint that some unknown person gaining unauthorized access into the PAN account of the people to access the Income Tax filing portal to alter their IT returns to get refunds,
A team of CID Cyber crime division officials headed by Superintendent of Police,MD Sharath,stepped up the probe and track down the accused through the bank account where transaction of the IT refunds happened.
The accused had used fake and fabricated KYC documents to open the bank account in the name of the victim.
In the present case investigated,accused person was successful in manipulating the IT returns and a refund of to the tune of Rs.1.41,84,360 credited to his fraudulent account.
Probe revealed that the accused had already siphoned off Rs.3.6 crore from different parts of the country.
Based on the efforts made by the team and with technical support,the accused person was traced and arrested from Dharwad.
The accused is a native of Hirisave,Hassan District but is currently residing in Dharwad city.
Investigation has revealed that the accused person was involved in several vehicle loan frauds also where he had taken money from Bajaj Finance and cheated them.
The income tax authorities have been informed about the vulnerability in their systems and have requested them to plug it.
In the same way Kaveri online portal,of the state government,which deals with Property registration was also misused by the accused person,the same has been intimated to the concerned.

The Cybercrime Division of CID Karnataka continuously works towards developing countermeasures and strategies to combat these evolving technological threats.
