The Bengaluru Traffic Police has decided to roll out vehicle restrictions on major flyovers and elevated corridors in a phased manner,after a preliminary assessment found that simultaneous diversion of multiple categories of vehicles was causing congestion at some locations.
The Traffic Police had earlier announced restrictions on different categories of vehicles on five major flyovers/elevated corridors to improve road safety and ensure smoother traffic movement.
Following implementation on four corridors,traffic movement on the BGS Flyover,Peenya Flyover and Double Decker Flyover has been found to be smooth and efficient.
However,on the International Airport Road Elevated Corridor from Sanjeev Nagar Cross to Vidyashilpa Junction,simultaneous diversion of goods vehicles, two-wheelers and autorickshaws at approach ramps led to traffic conflicts,queuing and congestion.The diversions also affected traffic on the adjoining ground-level road.
As a result,restrictions on the Airport Road Elevated Corridor will now be implemented in phases.
In the first phase,restrictions on goods vehicles will continue during the prescribed timings,while two-wheelers and autorickshaws will be allowed to use the elevated corridor.
The Traffic Police has advised two-wheeler riders to predominantly use the leftmost lane, maintain lane discipline,avoid unsafe overtaking and travel at a safe speed of not more than 60 kmph.
The same phased approach will be adopted on the Electronic City Elevated Corridor from September 11, 2026.
Initially,restrictions will be imposed on goods vehicles, while two-wheelers will continue to be permitted.
The remaining notified restrictions will be introduced subsequently in a calibrated manner based on traffic flow,road-safety conditions,feasibility of diversions at approach ramps and the impact on adjoining roads, officials said.
