A 25-year-old man was allegedly set on fire by his father-in-law and brother-in-law after he went to bring back his wife and children in Anekal on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
The victim has been identified as Naveen,a resident of Choodenahalli in Anekal taluk and a coconut trader by profession.
Senior officer told reporters that Naveen’s wife Suchitra had gone to her parents’house in Janata Colony,Anekal, along with their two children on April 13.
When Naveen visited the house the next day to bring them back home,Suchitra allegedly refused to return.
Police said Naveen then requested his in-laws to send back his wife and children,which reportedly led to an argument. During the altercation,Suchitra’s family allegedly assaulted him.
Investigators said Naveen’s father-in-law Sampangi allegedly poured petrol on him from a bottle, while his brother-in-law Munesh allegedly set him on fire.A passerby reportedly poured water on Naveen and helped rescue him.
Despite suffering severe burn injuries,Naveen initially admitted himself to the government hospital in Anekal before being shifted to a government hospital in Krishnagiri for advanced treatment.
Before a magistrate,Naveen reportedly gave a dying declaration accusing his wife Suchitra,father-in-law Sampangi,mother-in-law and brother-in-law Munesh of setting him ablaze.
Initially,Anekal Police Station had registered a case of attempt to murder.
However,after battling for life for 19 days,Naveen succumbed to injuries on May 2,following which the case was converted into murder.
Police have arrested Sampangi and Munesh and remanded them to judicial custody. Investigation is underway regarding the alleged role of Naveen’s wife and mother-in-law, officer said.
