The Central Division Cyber Crime Police have launched a massive manhunt for a conman who allegedly impersonated the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Division, and called police inspectors demanding money.
The fraud came to light on Friday after the S.J.Park Police Inspector received a message containing the photograph of the DCP from an unknown mobile number, seeking money. The message falsely projected the sender as DCP Akshay M.Hakay.
Suspecting foul play, the inspector contacted the DCP directly and shared screenshots of the message.Upon verification,it was confirmed that the message had been sent by an impostor.
Taking cognisance of the incident,Mr.Hakay first lodged an online complaint and later filed a formal complaint with the Cyber Crime Police, seeking legal action against the offender.
Based on the complaint, the police have registered an FIR against an unknown person under relevant sections pertaining to impersonation and identity theft, and further investigation is underway.
