Auroville,Tamilnadu–In a vibrant testament to India’s enduring linguistic tapestry,the international community of Auroville recently played host to a unique confluence of minds.
Multilingual scholars from Delhi University embarked on an enriching 10-day Tamil Classical Language Workshop,meticulously crafted through the collaborative spirit of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT) and the Department of Indian Languages and Literature, Delhi University.
The immersive programme drew together fifteen enthusiastic Ph.D.scholars and five esteemed faculty members,representing a remarkable cross-section of India’s regional diversity.
Professors hailing from Punjab,Manipur,and Bengal joined students with expertise spanning journalism and a rich array of languages including Hindi,Sanskrit, Bengali,Manipuri,and Punjabi,all united by a shared passion for exploring the depths of classical Tamil.
Unearthing Literary Gems:A Journey into Sangam Era
The workshop provided a fertile ground for intellectual exploration,with scholars engaging in profound discussions and offering fresh perspectives on Tamil Sangam literature.
The historical narratives embedded within texts like Sirupanatruppadai came alive through their rigorous analysis.
A particularly captivating aspect of their research delved into the journeys of ancient Tamil bards across the verdant landscapes of the Pondicherry region, often traversing in humble bullock carts.
Through insightful conversations centered on the region’s native flora,the scholars unearthed fascinating layers of cultural and botanical significance woven into the literary fabric of the Aranya region.

The scholars also had the distinct privilege of interacting with Dr.Jayanti S.Ravi,IAS,the esteemed Secretary of the Auroville Foundation.
Welcoming the delegation,Dr.Ravi eloquently underscored the potent role of languages in fostering understanding and bridging cultural divides.
Her words resonated deeply as she emphasized the critical importance of nurturing linguistic unity across the diverse expanse of India.
“The palpable enthusiasm among students from so many different states to delve into the study of Tamil,” she remarked,”lays an incredibly strong foundation for the very essence of Indian unity.”
The engaging interaction further explored the profound connection between Sanskrit and Tamil,positioning them as the twin pillars upon which Indian civilisation stands.
This highlighted the harmonious coexistence of both ancient and contemporary languages within the nation’s cultural landscape.
Echoes of Devotion: Comparative Literary Insights
The workshop extended its intellectual embrace to the comparative study of poetic and devotional expressions across various Indian languages.
Thought-provoking sessions drew compelling thematic parallels between the heartfelt verses of Andal, Meera Bai, Akka Mahadevi,and Lal Ded,revealing shared spiritual and emotional landscapes.
Furthermore,the scholars explored the extensive travels of Guru Nanak to distant lands like Mecca-Medina and Sri Lanka,illuminating the common historical threads and shared spiritual motifs that bind Indian cultures together.

Beyond the academic rigor, participants were offered enriching immersive experiences within Auroville’s unique cultural tapestry.They toured iconic landmarks such as:

Forging Future Pathways:Internships and Collaborative Research
Looking ahead,an exciting 6-month internship programme has been proposed,offering Delhi University scholars the opportunity to immerse themselves further in Tamil research within the vibrant intellectual environment of Auroville.
Ambitious plans are also underway for future comparative linguistic research encompassing Sanskrit, Tamil, French, and English,with the goal of publishing collective studies that underscore the multifaceted nature of India’s linguistic unity.
A Token of Tamil Tradition: Honoring Participation
In a gesture of cultural appreciation, participants were presented with thoughtful tokens of Tamil tradition – herbal refreshments and fragrant hibiscus-flavoured biscuits.
Faculty members received special mementoes and copies of the comprehensive Auroville Dictionary.
Notably,special commendation was bestowed upon research focusing on the enduring historical legacy of Sirupaanar, the revered Tamil bard.
Reflecting on the workshop’s profound impact,Prof. Umadevi,the dedicated coordinator of the event, eloquently stated,”Sangam literature stands as a powerful and enduring testimony to India’s inherent diverse cultural unity.”
