“Kharge says one found in touch with Pakistan-based LeT account; government plans stricter verification of migrant workers”.
Kalaburagi City Police have detained two persons for questioning over their suspected links with extremist elements through social media, with preliminary inquiries indicating that one of them was in contact with a social media account linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
Kalaburagi City Police Commissioner Dr.Sharanappa S.D. said a special team had detained the two persons following suspicious online activities.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that one of them was linked to suspicious social media accounts allegedly associated with radicalisation and was in contact with an LeT-linked account operating from Pakistan.
Taking the issue seriously, the government was examining the social media activities and other details of migrant workers and would take appropriate action in coordination with the Union government,he said.
Kharge, however, emphasised that people from other States could not be prevented from coming to Karnataka in search of employment,as it was their constitutional right. He urged employers to conduct thorough background checks before hiring workers.
The government would convene meetings with major e-commerce and delivery companies, logistics firms, coffee associations and homestay operators after the upcoming festival holidays to discuss standard operating procedures (SOPs) for worker verification.
“We have repeatedly offered to help employers with verification, but nobody is coming forward. Many take it lightly, saying they are concerned only about their work,” he said.
The government would also explore ways to expedite verification through local police stations, Kharge added,
urging factories and other establishments employing workers from outside the State to ensure proper background checks.
