The East Division police, as part of the ‘Beda Bro’ and ‘RISE’ campaigns,conducted a special drive around educational institutions to prevent drug abuse among students and curb the sale of narcotic and prohibited substances.
Police teams checked 575 shops and commercial establishments,including medical stores,hotels,grocery and stationery shops,mobile stores,ice-cream parlours and photocopy shops located near educational institutions.
During the drive,police booked four drug cases,232 petty cases and 282 cases under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
As many as 305 suspicious persons were questioned and 27 suspicious vehicles seized.
The teams checked establishments for narcotic substances,prohibited items and other materials that could potentially be mixed with drugs or supplied to students.
Food items,ice-creams and other products were also inspected for suspicious substances.
Police personnel also visited schools and colleges and held 125 meetings with principals, heads of institutions and management representatives.
The meetings focused on student safety,discipline, prevention of drug abuse and identifying suspicious activities around campuses.
Police warned educational institutions to remain vigilant about strangers loitering near campuses and people attempting to lure students into drug abuse or other illegal activities.
The East Division police said the special drive would continue and urged the public and educational institutions to immediately report suspicious activities around schools and colleges.
