The Karnataka Cabinet has approved the premature release of 28 life convicts lodged in various central prisons across the state, based on their good conduct, Home Minister Priyank Kharge said on Friday.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister D.K.Shivakumar.
According to Kharge,45 cases of life convicts were examined for premature release. Of these,28 prisoners were approved for release on the basis of their conduct and other prescribed eligibility criteria.
In addition,the Cabinet has approved the premature release of one more life convict subject to obtaining the consent of the Union Home Ministry.
With this,a total of 29 life convicts are eligible for premature release,the Minister said.
The cases were examined based on the government’s prescribed guidelines, the prisoners’ conduct during incarceration, the period they had spent in prison and other stipulated criteria.
Kharge said the Cabinet decision would now be forwarded to the Governor for approval,following which the release process would be taken forward.
