A surprise inspection conducted by officials of Central Prison Parappana Agrahara on Sunday led to the seizure of four mobile phones,two SIM cards and an earphone after inmates were allegedly caught using mobile phones inside the prison premises.
According to prison authorities,the operation began on May 17 when security personnel detected a prohibited Android mobile phone in Room No.3 of Security Section-01 during a routine inspection around 7.30 am.
Later in the day,during prisoner movement and counting in Barrack ‘B’,officials allegedly found inmates Hemanth Sagar P.N.and Fahad speaking over mobile phones inside Room No.5. A subsequent search led to another inmate,Wasim Khan,allegedly being caught with a mobile phone hidden in his pocket.
During questioning,the inmates allegedly disclosed that the seized mobile phones belonged to convict prisoner Mohammed Rafiq .
Prison authorities said a total of four mobile phones, two SIM cards and one earphone were seized during the operation.
This incident also highlighted that the mobile phones are being used despite jammers and constant monitoring in place.
Based on the complaint filed by Karna B.Kshatri, Superintendent (In-Charge) of the prison, authorities have initiated legal action against the inmates and others suspected of helping smuggle prohibited items into the jail under provisions of the Prisons. (Amendment) Act,2022 and other relevant laws.Further investigation is underway.
