Human skull fragments and skeletal remains were found in a lake near Mugaluru in the Sarjapur area on Friday, raising suspicions of murder.
According to police,locals who had gone near the lake noticed the remains scattered along the bank and immediately alerted the authorities.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the bones and skull may have been dragged and scattered by stray animals.
Police officials who visited the spot said the condition of the remains indicates they may have been lying there for some time.
Investigators also recovered a saree and pieces of clothing from the scene, leading officials to suspect that the remains could belong to a woman.
A team from the forensic and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) unit visited the location and collected the skull and skeletal remains for examination.
Senior police officials,including DYSP Gopal Nayak and Sarjapur police inspector,inspected the scene and gathered information from local residents.
Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
