Emile Boucqueau,a Belgian man who dedicated his life to improving the lives of underprivileged children in Puducherry, India,passed away on May 2, 2022,at the age of 93.
A Life Dedicated to Service
Boucqueau arrived in India in 1971 and quickly became involved in social work. He worked at “Volantariat” in Pondicherry and at the ‘Fraternal Life Service Home’ in Ousteri. In 1985,he founded the Puducherry Higher Education Benefits Society (PHEBS) to help Indian children attend school.
PHEBS: A Beacon of Hope for Underprivileged Children
PHEBS provides comprehensive support to children in need, helping them overcome poverty and achieve their educational goals.
The organization offers financial assistance to cover school costs, including uniforms, books, transportation, and boarding fees.
Additionally, PHEBS provides social support to children and their families,offering guidance, counseling, and emergency accommodation.
Carrying on the Legacy
After serving as PHEBS president until 2007, Boucqueau continued to be actively involved in the organization as treasurer and deputy secretary.
His dedication and leadership inspired countless individuals, including Maria and Leema, former PHEBS beneficiaries who now work as staff members, ensuring the continuation of Boucqueau’s mission.

Beyond academics,PHEBS recognizes the importance of cultural education.The organization recently organized a Pongal Festival and Artists Group Show,as an initiative of Renowned Artist Ejoumale in Vanna Aruvi Art Gallery which was inaugurated by Sahitya Akademi Award Recipient,poet,writer,Artist and Art Critic Mr Indran.
Several such events organised to promote indigenous art, culture,and traditional knowledge among students.
