Karnataka: Minor Girl’s Suicide Case Turns Out To Be Honour Killing; Father, Brother Arrested by Chelur Police

The Chelur police have arrested a farmer,his son and brother for brutally killing a 17-year-old daughter over honour killing and disposed the body by burning in their field on June 9.

The accused has been identified as, deceased father Parashurama,uncle,Tukarama and her brother, Shivaraju.

However the incident came to light when alert beat police patrolling in the area came to know about the mysterious death of a girl and probed the matter before alerting his higher ups.

Based on the suo moto case taken up,the police arrested the accused charging them under murder and destruction of evidence.

The victim,Nethravathi,is the only daughter of Parashuram among the three children.

Parashuram though belonging to a ST community he was local leader having a hold in the community.

Senior officer told reporters,Nethravathy who pursuing PU course in Sira government college fell in love with Kumar, belonging to SC community.

The family came to know about the relationship and stopped her studies and got her engaged on May 28. Not willing to get married Nethravathy went missing two days later.

Furious over this the family members started searching for Nethravathy and managed to trace her on June 8 and brought her back home.

The accused were agitated for bringing disrepute to the family and tortured her before force feeding her Pesticide to make it look like suicide. When Nethravathy resisted and refused to consume the pesticide,the trio strangulated her to death and later cremated the body in their field to hush up the murder.

The police also found the role of deceased grandmother Lakshmamma for abetting the murder but due to age factor and lack of evidence.

It was very unfortunate incident that caste system within the community is deep rooted and leading to such incidents, a police officer, said .
