Abhijit Ray :The largest vegetable mandi in eastern India will be built at Singur in Hooghly. The process of setting up industries in Singur, once the epicentre of the opposition movement, had already begun. With this, the project of the largest wholesale vegetable market is being added. The concerned entrepreneurs visited the land identified for setting up a wholesale market on Sunday. State Agriculture Marketing Minister Bechram Manna and department official A Subba Ya were present on the occasion.According to state administration sources, the Rs 750-crore project is being organised by greater Kolkata Fruit, Potato, Onion, Vegetable and Lemon Merchant Association. The state government will set up the necessary infrastructure for the industry. A total of 340 bighas of land has been earmarked for the project. This will greatly benefit vegetable farmers and traders. It will also be another advantage. Big vegetable carts will no longer have to enter Kolkata. In that case, the pressure of traffic in the capital city is expected to reduce to some extent. All the big vehicles loaded with vegetables will stop at Singur. Then the wholesale buyers will take it to Kolkata in small cars. We are building this project as an industrial hub. Minister Becharam Babu said, “In the name of setting up industries in Singur, the Left has done disastrous activities in the past. ’And now the BJP is crying crocodile tears. But the real work has been done by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. His plan is to have projects worth Rs 750 crore. ’. Sources in the state administration also said that the project in Singur had been stalled since the Left rule. The matter was brought to the notice of the Chief Minister by the industrialists at the recent Global Summit on Industry.After that, it was not too late to get the project approved. It is learnt that around 800 small and big agricultural produce traders are getting involved in the project. A huge infrastructure will quickly raise its head at Indrakhali in Singur. The hub for vegetable business will include a cold storage, fire station, small hospital, petrol pump, power substation, parking zone and guest house, the organisers said. Singur will be the hub of vegetable trade in the state as well as the entire eastern part of the country. The project will be operational in the next one-and-a-half years.
