Belt up or face action! Seatbelts for all four-wheeler occupants compulsory in Karnataka -DGP Praveen Sood

T he Director General and Inspector General of Police on Tuesday directed the commissioners and the traffic department heads and superintendent of Police of all the districts to enforce compulsory seat belt for the passengers of M1 vehicles with enhanced fine of Rs.1,000.

Quoting the order of the union ministry of road transport and highways ( RT 11036/15/2022) dated November 19,2022,Additional director General of Police,crime and technical services and commissioner of traffic and road safety,R. Hitendra,mentioned section 194B of Motor Vehicle Act mandating the use of safety belts as per the section 1 of section 194 B stating whoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a seat belt or carries passengers not wearing safety belts shall be punished with a fine of Rs. 1000.

The order was issued following a death of former chairman of Tata Sons Cyrus Mistry died in a high-speed car crash in Palghar in Maharastra .
Mistry was in the backseat and wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

The city traffic police however said that they have already enforced mandatory seat belts for passengers since the rule was updated in November this year .

We have slapping fine for the first time violators with Rs.500 and repeat offender with Rs.1,000”. However now the fine has been enhanced we need to update the Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) to start the enforcement.
