T
he Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi is a source of inspiration for the whole country, said Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
Talking to reporters after garlanding the statues of Mahatma Gandhi on his 153rd birth anniversary and the birth anniversary of former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri in Vidhana Soudha and Vikas Soudha here on Sunday, he said Gandhi ji suffered a lot of humiliation and insults in his life but he stood against it and fought. He dedicated his life and everything for the cause of the nation.
It was Mahatma who gave a new direction and dimension to the country’s freedom struggle. He gave two weapons to the nation, truth and non-violence.
At that time many people had expressed their doubts but as the time passed the retrograde policies of the mighty British empire made people revolt against them and forced the Britishers to quit India. The freedom struggle was led by Mahatma Gandhi ji himself.
Open book
Bommai said as Mahatma Gandhi had said his life was an open book and that was his message to all. He never crossed the route of truth and non-violence till his death.
Some of his thinking is relevant even today. Gandhi ji’ s freedom struggle was not restricted to only independence but also to the country’s economic and social life too.
His slogan of ‘Gram Swaraj’ aimed at building the nation from the bottom. He had propagated that more than en masse production of what manufactured by the countrymen was important and it is relevant today.
Treading the path shown by Gandhi ji will not only make India a strong nation but also enable all people to live happily together.
This is the day to vow that they will adopt the thinking and principles of the mahatma in their lives and to dedicate themselves for the nation.
Shastri led a tough life without compromise.
The CM said today is also the birth anniversary of another great leader, Lal Bahadur Shastri and there were a lot of similarities between Shastri and the Mahatma as they were born on the same day. Unfortunately, Shastri was the prime minister for a very short period but still he has made a home in the hearts of millions of people.
Though hailed from a poor family, he never compromised anywhere and led a struggling life. Even as the PM, he followed principles but never attached to the post.
During the India-Pakistan War, he went to the border to boost the morale of soldiers and also gave tips to win the battle.
Shastri laid the foundation stone for the country to become self-reliant in food production through the green revolution, and coined the slogans ‘Jai Jawan’, Jai Kisan’ to respect both soldiers and farmers.
