Nepal’s ruling coalition on the verge of collapse, Allies are threatening to part ways

Today let’s have a look at a country that is closer to India or closest as some would say. Here, I am talking about none other than Nepal which is in a grip of political crisis which led Nepal’s ruling coalition on the brink of breakdown; because two of this five parties’ coalition government are threatening of parting their ways. The reason being of not wanting an American project to be approved in Nepal. The project of controversy is MCC- The Millennium Challenge Corporation, which was established by U.S Congress in 2004 as an independent bilateral foreign aid agency. It was formed with an objective to reduce poverty through economic growth. Assistance under MCC is given to low income and lower middle income countries. So, it’s an American funded project aimed at improving Nepal’s electricity sector. Signed in 2017, this deal is aimed at increasing the supply of electricity by strengthening cross border energy trade between India and Nepal. The deal was expected to boost country’s economy by bringing employment opportunities to its citizens. But the deal is at halt from past 5 years since it was signed. Now, Nepal has the sword of damocles hanging over their head as there are host of reasons. Chief of them being China’s involvement in Nepal’s affairs. The U.S suspects that China do not want Nepal to carry forth this deal as it could become a geo strategic counter to Belton road initiative. Coming back to Kathmandu; the effect of such instability of power is visible with the number of protestors on road. The two of ruling coalition parties that are all ready to part their ways are- Communist party of Nepal Maoist Centre and Communist party of Nepal Unified Socialist Both of these are known to sympathize with Bejing. Naturally, they are opposing ratification of MCC and want some of its provisions to be amended.
