Vipin Gaur announces the role of the International Council for Journalists in strengthening international cooperation; Indo-Kenya Friendship Journalists Forum, journalist exchange programmes and cross-border news collaboration among key proposals
Nairobi, Kenya: In a significant initiative to strengthen media relations between India and Kenya, Dr. Vipin Gaur, General Secretary of the Newspaper Association of India (NAI) and Global President of the International Council for Journalists (ICJ), held a productive meeting with the leadership of the Association of Freelance Journalists (AFJ), Kenya. The meeting focused on developing a strategic partnership between the media organisations and creating new opportunities for journalists in both countries.
The AFJ delegation was led by Winnie Kamau, President of AFJ, and included Henry Owino, Vice President, and Ruth Ayugi, Deputy Secretary. The discussions centred on international media cooperation, professional development, journalist exchange programmes, cross-border news sharing and stronger institutional ties between India and Kenya.
Both sides expressed interest in moving forward with a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a framework for long-term cooperation and implement mutually beneficial initiatives.
Indo-Kenya Friendship Journalists Forum Proposed
One of the key proposals discussed was the establishment of the Indo-Kenya Friendship Journalists Forum, a platform dedicated to strengthening professional relations between Indian and Kenyan journalists.
The proposed forum aims to encourage dialogue, cultural understanding, knowledge exchange, collaborative reporting and greater engagement between media professionals. It is expected to provide a foundation for developing lasting professional connections and promoting closer cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting also explored the possibility of establishing a journalist exchange programme to enable media professionals from India and Kenya to share experiences, understand each other’s media landscapes and explore international reporting opportunities.
Global Festival of Journalism 2027 to Encourage Kenyan Participation
Dr. Vipin Gaur expressed his interest in encouraging greater participation by Kenyan journalists in India’s international media initiatives, particularly the Global Festival of Journalism 2027, scheduled for February 12–14, 2027.
The festival is expected to offer opportunities for journalists, media leaders and communication professionals to exchange ideas, build networks and explore emerging trends in journalism.
The discussions also covered possible participation in the ACOS Alliance meeting in November 2026 and collaboration for the AFJ Freelance Journalists Conference scheduled for November 2027.
International Council for Journalists to Support the Initiative
Highlighting the importance of international coordination, Dr. Vipin Gaur, who also serves as the Global President of the International Council for Journalists (ICJ), stated that the ICJ would play a significant role in these activities.
He emphasised that the council could contribute to strengthening international journalist networks, encouraging professional exchanges and supporting collaborative initiatives connecting media communities across borders.
The involvement of the ICJ is expected to add an international dimension to the proposed cooperation, alongside the efforts of NAI and AFJ to build stronger professional ties between India and Kenya.
Binish Thomas, Director of the International Council for Journalists (ICJ), congratulated Dr. Vipin Gaur on the development and expressed his enthusiasm about the emerging media ties with Kenya. He welcomed the initiative as a positive step towards expanding international cooperation and creating new opportunities for journalists through professional networking and cross-border engagement.
Cross-Border News Collaboration Between India and Kenya
Another important area of discussion was cooperation between Talk Africa and NAI News to facilitate the exchange and publication of news stories from both countries.
The proposed collaboration aims to increase the international visibility of relevant developments in India and Kenya, encourage cross-border storytelling and provide audiences with a broader understanding of the two nations.
The organisations also discussed press card initiatives for AFJ members and opportunities to expand professional networking and development for freelance journalists.
Dr. Gaur further stated that he would put AFJ President Winnie Kamau in touch with the High Commission of India in Kenya so that, whenever relevant events or media-related activities are organised, she and the AFJ team could be considered for participation.
AFJ also offered support in facilitating an introduction to the Media Council of Kenya in connection with Dr. Gaur’s professional engagement with the Kenyan media community.
Vipin Gaur Said: Journalism Is a Bridge Between Nations
Speaking about the meeting, Dr. Vipin Gaur said, “It was a great pleasure meeting Winnie Kamau, Henry Owino and Ruth Ayugi. The warmth, respect and encouragement they extended to me gave me an even greater boost of energy and motivation. I am delighted by their enthusiasm for strengthening media relations between India and Kenya.”
He added, “Journalism is much more than reporting news; it is a powerful bridge connecting people, cultures and nations. India and Kenya share a longstanding friendship, and through this partnership, we want to create meaningful opportunities for journalists to connect, learn from one another and tell each other’s stories to a wider audience.”
Dr. Gaur further stated, “Our objective is to transform our discussions into practical initiatives. The proposed MoU, the Indo-Kenya Friendship Journalists Forum, journalist exchange programmes and cross-border news collaboration can provide a strong foundation for lasting cooperation. The International Council for Journalists will also play a significant role in supporting these activities and strengthening our international media connections.”
AFJ Welcomes New Opportunities for International Cooperation
The AFJ leadership expressed optimism about the proposed partnership and the opportunities it could create for freelance journalists and media professionals in Kenya and India.
The collaboration is expected to focus on professional engagement, international exposure, shared learning and stronger institutional connections. Further discussions will determine the implementation framework and next steps towards formalising the partnership through the proposed MoU.
A New Chapter in India–Kenya Media Relations
The proposed collaboration reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the relationship between the media communities of India and Kenya. By bringing together NAI, AFJ and the international network of the ICJ, the initiative seeks to create new opportunities for responsible journalism, professional development and international media engagement.
For Dr. Vipin Gaur, the initiative is also an opportunity to deepen the longstanding friendship between India and Kenya by bringing journalists, institutions and communities closer together.
The proposed partnership aims to turn a shared vision into concrete action, establish stronger professional networks and create lasting bridges between Indian and Kenyan journalism.
