The Karnataka Cabinet has approved the purchase and installation of advanced security equipment, including AI-based cameras, portable signal jammers and a Prisoner Calling System, to modernise the state’s prison department, Home Minister Priyank Kharge said on Friday.
The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Friday. The move is aimed at strengthening security, surveillance and operational efficiency across prisons in the state.
The prisons will be equipped with artificial intelligence-based surveillance cameras and portable signal jammers, besides a regulated telephone calling system for inmates. The technology is expected to help the department detect and prevent unauthorised activities and improve monitoring inside prison premises.
“Given the changing challenges, it is necessary to introduce advanced technology in the prison department as well. These measures have been taken to further strengthen security and surveillance,” Kharge said.
The modernisation comes amid increasing focus on tightening security and curbing the use of unauthorised mobile phones and communication channels inside prisons.
