A Nurse was critically injured after her estranged husband allegedly ambushed her and attacked her with weapons before throwing a suspected acid-like chemical on her at the basement parking area of a hospital in JP Nagar on Thursday morning.
The victim,identified as Madhumitha,a native of West Bengal,works as a nurse at Narayana Hospital in JP Nagar.Her condition is reported to be critical.
According to DCP (South) K.Vamsi Krishna,the incident occurred between 9 am and 9.15 am within the jurisdiction of JP Nagar police station.
Police said Madhumitha and the accused,Venkatesh,a native of Madurai in Tamil Nadu,had met through a dating app and later got married in Madurai.
While the marriage took place in 2023,according to one version of the information,police sources have also indicated that it was in early 2024.
The couple had been living separately for about a year following marital and family disputes.
Venkatesh,who works for an oil and gas company based in Chennai, allegedly travelled more than 400 km from Madurai to Bengaluru on a motorcycle on the eve of the attack.
On Thursday morning,he allegedly confronted Madhumitha in the hospital’s basement parking area and attacked her with a long sharp weapon and another smaller sharp weapon.
He then allegedly threw a floor-cleaning chemical suspected to be acid at her.
Bystanders reportedly tried to intervene,following which an on-duty JP Nagar Traffic PSI,Venkatesh and his staff rushed to the spot,secured the scene and apprehended the accused.He was subsequently handed over to the jurisdictional police.
Madhumitha was given emergency treatment at the hospital and remains in critical condition.
A Scene of Crime Operations (SOCO) team inspected the spot and collected samples of the chemical substance.
The samples will be subjected to forensic examination to determine its exact composition and whether it was an acid or a cleaning chemical.
Police have taken Venkatesh into custody and are investigating the attack,including the circumstances leading to the assault and the nature of the marital dispute.
