A 61-year-old woman from Madhava Nagar has allegedly been cheated of Rs.31.78 lakh by unidentified fraudsters who lured her with the promise of releasing a fake insurance claim.
The victim,on Saturday filed a complaint at the Central Divison CEN Crime Police Station, stating that she received a phone call on March 27 at around 11 am from a person claiming to be an official associated with an insurance company.
The caller informed her that an insurance amount of Rs.63 lakh linked to her deceased husband was pending and could be released after paying certain processing charges.
Police said the victim later received multiple calls from different mobile numbers,with the accused posing as company representatives and officials.
They also sent emails from various IDs, sharing documents related to the alleged insurance claim to gain her trust.
Believing the claims to be genuine,victim transferred a total of Rs.31,78,915 through online transactions from her ICICI Bank account to multiple bank accounts provided by the accused.
After receiving the money,the accused became unreachable,prompting the victim to approach the police.
A case has been registered against unknown persons under relevant sections of cheating and impersonation. The Central CEN Crime Police are investigating the case and efforts are on to trace the accused and recover the defrauded amount.
