Three die of suspected toxic fumes while cleaning water sump in Whitefield

Three persons died of suspected asphyxiation while cleaning an underground water sump at Immadihalli Temple Circle,behind Panchamukhi Anjaneya Temple, within the limits of Whitefield Police Station on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Munishamappa (67),owner of the house,Rudhra Kumar (40),a plumber; and Vishwanath Achari (24),a delivery boy.

Senior officer told reporters that the incident came to light after Aravinda made a call to the 112 emergency helpline.

On reaching the spot,police found that Munishamappa had entered the water sump to clean it using certain chemicals.

During the process,he is suspected to have developed breathing difficulties due to toxic fumes and collapsed inside the sump.

Rudhra Kumar,who reportedly went to check on him,also entered the sump and collapsed due to similar breathing issues as the chemical reacted reduced the amount of oxygen inside the sump.

Later,Vishwanath Achari,a delivery executive who came to see what had happened,is said to have entered the sump and likewise fell unconscious.

The family members with the help of neighbours managed to pull them out and were shifted for treatment.

While Munishamappa and Rudhra Kumar were taken to Manipal Hospital,Vishwanath Achari was admitted to Vydehi Hospital.However,doctors declared that all three had died on the way to the hospital.

The Whitefield Police visited the scene inspected the area and initiated a probe .

A case of un natural death has been registered and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of death,with toxic fumes from chemicals suspected to be the primary reason.

The police are awaiting posting mortem report for further investigation.
