In a dramatic late-night rescue, the Bengaluru City Police saved a 23-year-old woman who allegedly attempted suicide by walking into Bellandur Lake following prolonged domestic harassment.
The incident occurred around 9.23 pm on February 18 within the limits of the HSR Layout Police Station.
The woman, identified as Swati (23),a resident of Ibbaluru, called the emergency helpline Namma 112 stating that she intended to end her life due to distress caused by frequent domestic disputes with her husband, a water tanker driver.
Senior officer said Swati had alleged that her husband regularly harassed her over domestic issues.Unable to bear the alleged harassment, she informed the 112 control room that she would be committing suicide.
Acting swiftly, the control room alerted Assistant Sub-Inspector Chandrashekhar and Police Constable Lal Saab Khasim Sab Bagayath, who were on patrol in Hoysala-189.The officers reached the area within 21 minutes.
However,it turned into a herculean task when Swati switched off her mobile phone and moved towards the lake in the darkness around 9.30 pm.
“It was pitch dark and difficult to trace her location after she switched off her phone.ASI Chandrashekhar kept trying to convince her not to take the extreme step, while I rushed towards the lake.We roped in a few passers-by to assist in the search,”Lal Saab recalled.
After an intense search operation along the lake’s edge, the team managed to spot and pull Swati out seconds before she could drown.
She was counselled and emotionally stabilised before being taken to the Bellandur Police Station for further assistance.
Police later summoned her husband for counselling and warned him against harassing her, advising him to take proper care of his wife.
“It was a tense moment, but we managed to rescue her in time,”Lal Saab said.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) Kuldeep Kumar R Jain appreciated the Hoysala team for their prompt response and life-saving efforts.
Police officials said the timely coordination between the control room and field staff prevented a potential tragedy, underscoring the department’s commitment to emergency response and humanitarian service.
