New Delhi, January 28, 2026: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a major contract worth Rs 5,000-10,000 crore from the Royal Commission for Riyadh City for the extension of the Riyadh Metro’s Red Line, bolstering the engineering giant’s international infrastructure portfolio.
The Heavy Civil Infrastructure business of L&T will execute design and turnkey construction of an 8.4 km driverless metro line, including 7.1 km of deep underground tunnels and 1.3 km elevated tracks, along with five new stations (three underground). The project, using Tunnel Boring Machine technology, connects King Saud University to the Diriyah Gate Development and is slated for completion in six years.
This order is part of a $2.75 billion ultra-mega project awarded to a consortium led by Italy’s Webuild S.p.A (30.1% share), with L&T, Saudi firm Nesma & Partners Contracting, France’s Alstom, and Spain’s IDOM as partners. Riyadh Metro, operational since November 2024, has already ferried 173 million passengers, with the Red Line extension addressing surging demand.
The win coincides with L&T’s Q3 FY26 earnings release today, where analysts forecast 15-17% revenue growth to Rs 73,500-75,750 crore and 26-29% net profit rise to Rs 4,250-4,370 crore. L&T shares rose post-announcement.
Eng. Ibrahim Al-Sultan, CEO of the Royal Commission, highlighted the extension’s role in Riyadh’s sustainable transport goals. L&T termed it a “testament to customer trust” in its global transit expertise.
