The Karnataka Director General and Inspector General of Police has directed all city police commissioners and range-level senior officers to submit detailed,unit-wise proposals for reallocation of police station jurisdictions across the state.
In a memorandum dated October 3,2026,DG&IGP,M.A. Saleem noted that, apart from specialised police stations,Karnataka currently has 854 law and order police stations and 118 traffic police stations functioning across various district and city police units.
The memorandum said several police stations were established decades ago and their jurisdictions have since changed significantly due to population growth, urbanisation, expansion of commercial and residential areas, changing crime patterns and traffic flow.
As a result, the workload of some stations has increased substantially.
The officers have been asked to study the workload of police stations under their respective units and propose fresh jurisdiction boundaries aimed at ensuring better supervision, equitable distribution of workload, effective law-and-order management, investigation of criminal cases and improved traffic management.
The DG&IGP has sought the detailed proposals at the earliest, with the exercise intended to improve the overall efficiency of police stations.
