An artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled enforcement traffic encamera installed to detect traffic violations in Bengaluru has reportedly issued a helmet violation challan after mistaking a guitar being carried on a scooter for a person.
Souvik Dutta was travelling on his scooter from Hebbal towards Tin Factory with a guitar strapped to his back.
The AI camera apparently mistook the guitar for a pillion rider and detected it as a person travelling without a helmet.
A challan,along with a photograph captured by the camera,was subsequently sent to Dutta online.
Shocked by the photograph and the alleged error,he shared the incident on social media,highlighting the AI camera’s mistake.
He raised a complaint on BTP official handle stating “I was riding my wife’s two-wheeler alone with my guitar slung on my back in Bangalore.
@blrcitytraffic my wife received a traffic challan (notice no. 86202541) for “pillion riding without helmet”.So much for AI based traffic violation detection! Pls revoke the challan “.
Reacting to his post the BTP officials asked him to contact traffic automation section for rectification of violations.
The incident has since drawn attention to the limitations of automated traffic enforcement systems.Responding to the post,Bengaluru Traffic Police officials asked Dutta to contact them regarding the challan.
Many motorists have raised the concern that the Enforcement cameras book them for violations for jumping signal even crossing the pedestrian crossing and stop to allow the other vehicles to pass through.
A senior police officials said that such issues can be resolved at the automation centre after submitting required proof.
