A city court has sentenced a 44-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh for possessing and selling opium in Bengaluru.
The accused,Bhagirath Dewasi,a resident of Devanahalli, was arrested by Girinagar police on July 19, 2021.
Following a tip-off that a person was selling narcotic drugs behind the Indira Canteen at Banashankari 3rd Stage.
Acting on the information,a police team raided the spot and apprehended Dewasi. The police seized 2 kg and 40 grams of opium from his possession,along with a two-wheeler allegedly used in the offence.
Girinagar police registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested the accused, who was subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
Police investigated the case,filed the charge sheet before the court.
After the trial,the court,presided over by Anand, convicted Dewasi and on August 29, 2026,sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh.
Public Prosecutor Sreevani represented the State and argued the case on behalf of the prosecution.
