A 58-year-old teacher from Cox Town has allegedly lost ₹30.63 lakh after falling victim to an online investment fraud promoted through a misleading advertisement claiming to be a Government of India investment scheme associated with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
According to the complaint registered with the East CEN Crime Police Station,the victim came across the advertisement on Google in February 2026.
The advertisement allegedly promised an investment programme in which transactions would be managed using artificial intelligence.
The victim reportedly joined the scheme on February 11 and continued making investments until July 3.
During this period,she was allegedly contacted by individuals identifying themselves as investment advisers and financial representatives.
The complaint names several individuals and provides contact numbers allegedly used by them.
The victim transferred money through UPI and NEFT from her Bank of Baroda and RBL Bank accounts to bank accounts allegedly provided by the fraudsters.
The victim told police that she had pledged her gold and borrowed money from friends and relatives to make the investments.
She has requested the authorities to trace the transactions and recover her hard-earned money.
Police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act,2000,and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023,and further investigation is underway.
