Under the esteemed auspices of the High Commission of Cyprus, an exclusive and culturally enriching musical evening was organized at the prestigious Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, as part of the Cultural Programme of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.
The event was graciously hosted by His Excellency Mr. Evagoras Vryonides, High Commissioner of Cyprus, who extended a warm invitation to dignitaries, diplomats, artists, and cultural enthusiasts for an unforgettable evening. In his welcoming address, the High Commissioner stated:
‘’Welcome, esteemed colleagues and friends. We are pleased to celebrate Cyprus’s six-month Presidency of the EU Council, ending in June, and to present four talented Cypriot musicians who have travelled to Delhi despite international difficulties. Their performance, Love and Affection for Humanity and the Homeland, reflects the spirit, heritage, and shared humanity of Cyprus and the Mediterranean. Thank you for your presence and open hearts. Please enjoy the music of Alexia Yiangou, Paris Paraschos, Clio Papadia, and Evagoras Karageorgis.”
The highlight of the evening was a mesmerizing performance by Mr. Evagoras Karageorgis, a renowned Cypriot composer, music educator, and accomplished lute player. He presented a unique musical journey titled “Love and Affection for Humanity and the Homeland”, featuring the evocative segment “Myrothkies Tou Yiasemiou (Scents of Jasmine)”. The visionary behind tonight’s journey, Evagoras is a master of the Laouto (Cypriot lute) With a career spanning decades of composition and academic study, he breathes new life into ancient verses, turning the words of our greatest poets into melodies that bridge the past with the modern world.
Joining him on stage were three exceptional artists who brought this vision to life. Clio Papadia, an accomplished pianist and scholar, provided the elegant, contemporary foundation of the ensemble. Her performance seamlessly blends the classical traditions of the West with the melodic textures of the East, mirroring the very spirit of the European Union. With the rich, resonant tones of her cello, Alexia Yiangou added a deep, soulful layer to the “Scents of Jasmine.” Her playing acts as a bridge between the instruments, grounding the ensemble’s sound in a harmony that is both somber and uplifting. Completing the quartet was Paris Paraschos, possessing a voice of rare emotional depth. As the ensemble’s storyteller, his interpretations capture the subtle nuances of the Cypriot spirit and a universal longing for peace.

Karageorgis, who trained at the prestigious Aaron Copland School of Music under Allen Brings and Leo Kraft, has developed a distinctive compositional voice blending contemporary techniques with traditional Cypriot folk elements. His work spans solo, chamber, orchestral, and electronic compositions, and includes award-winning creations such as “The Dream”, performed in the Cypriot dialect.
As a founding member of the Centre of Cypriot Composers, Karageorgis has contributed significantly to the global recognition of Cypriot music, with performances across Europe and beyond. His continued efforts in music education have also been instrumental in nurturing artistic talent and preserving cultural identity.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Dr. Vipin Gaur, General Secretary of the Newspaper Association of India and Editor of Country and Politics said, “Such cultural initiatives play a vital role in strengthening international relations and mutual understanding. Music is a universal language that transcends borders, and this evening beautifully showcased how art can connect nations like India and Cyprus. It is commendable that the Cyprus High Commission is promoting its rich cultural heritage on a global platform.”
The evening witnessed the presence of diplomats, cultural figures, media representatives, and art lovers, all of whom appreciated the soulful and immersive experience presented by the artists. The event not only highlighted the artistic richness of Cyprus but also reinforced cultural diplomacy and people-to-people connections between India and Cyprus, making it a memorable highlight of the EU Presidency cultural celebrations in India
