The Jeevan Bheemanagar Police Station have arrested a domestic worker identified as Chaitra for allegedly stealing 12.5 kg of silver articles worth Rs.35 lakh from her employer’s residence.
According to police,Chaitra,a native of Davanagere,had been working for the past one-and-a-half years at the house of a reputed surgeon employed at a prominent private hospital in the city.The accused allegedly stole silver utensils and pooja articles in phases.
Police said the silver items were stored on the upper floor of the house and were used only during festivals.
Taking advantage of this,Chaitra is suspected to have stolen one item at a time during her visits, ensuring that the theft went unnoticed.
Investigations revealed that her husband is undergoing cancer treatment and the family was in urgent need of money.The accused allegedly pawned the stolen silver articles and used the money for medical expenses.To avoid suspicion, she continued working at the same house even after committing the thefts.
However,a few days before Deepavali,she quit the job. When the family opened the bag containing silver articles ahead of the festival, they were shocked to find the utensils and pooja items missing.
Following a complaint, police launched an investigation and questioned former employees.
During interrogation,Chaitra reportedly confessed to the crime.Police recovered 12.5 kg of silver articles valued at Rs.35 lakh from her possession.
A case has been registered at Jeevan Bheemanagar Police Station,and further investigation is underway.
