Parappana Agrahara police have registered a case against two undertrial prisoners at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru for allegedly assaulting an assistant jailer.

The FIR was filed on January 16,following a complaint by Karna B Kshatri, Superintendent of Prisons (in-charge), Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. The injured is Murthi S,an assistant jailer,at the prison.

The FIR names Anand,33,(UTP: 1489)and Abdul Ghani, 41(UTP: 18589)as the accused 1 and accused 2.

According to the FIR, on January 7,between 3 and 3.30 pm,Murthi was posted on duty at Tower 2 gate. The complainant claimed that some of the inmates unnecessarily created a ruckus after being denied entry.

When Murthi refused and asked them to get permission from the jailer, the inmates “not only obstructed duty but also abused him in foul language”.

“In the presence of inmates and staff,Anand suddenly kicked me with his leg and assaulted me while I was seated in the chair.

Incidents of this nature are occurring daily, creating an atmosphere of fear to perform duties, and there is a lack of proper protection.

It is requested in the cited letter to please take appropriate legal action against the said convicts before the situation goes out of hand and to take measures for the protection of the staff,”the FIR noted.

“Therefore, as the aforementioned convicts assaulted the on-duty staff, obstructed duty, and violated prison rules, a case has been registered against the said convicts, and the complaint has been filed requesting appropriate legal action, etc.

The delay in filing the complaint is due to bringing the matter to the notice of higher officials, gathering information about the incident, and verifying it.”

An investigation is underway.Prison sources said there is serious concern regarding the safety of officials inside prisons in Karnataka, especially the Central Prison in Bengaluru.
