GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has instructed officials to prioritize the filling of potholes within the GBA limits.
Addressing a meeting held today at the IPP Centre in Malleswaram with officials and contractors,the Commissioner emphasized the need to fill potholes and expedite ongoing road works across GBA limits.
GBA limits include 1,648 km of major roads, comprising 702 km of arterial and 946 km of sub-arterial roads.
Between 2016 and 2024,white-topping works were completed on 61 roads covering a total length of 104 km.
A new white-topping project has been initiated on 82 roads spanning 143 km at a cost of ₹1,700 crore. Instructions were issued to prioritize and complete the ongoing works on these roads at the earliest.
To ensure public safety during white-topping works — particularly where ducts are being laid, side drains and underground drainage systems are being developed, and Cauvery water pipelines are being relocated — officials have been directed to install barricades and caution tape.
Additionally,contractors were instructed to immediately clear any debris piled along the roadside.
*Ensure Proper Drainage on Roads Under Construction:
As part of another initiative, black-topping of 182 roads covering 349 km is underway at a cost of ₹694 crore. For roads under construction, proper grading must be done to ensure there is no water stagnation.
The black-topping works must be completed by November 2025, as directed by the Commissioner.
*Contractors Responsible for Roads Under Defect Liability Period (DLP):
There are 178 roads covering 401 km currently under the Defect Liability Period (DLP).Contractors are responsible for repairing potholes and surface damage on these roads.
If repairs are not carried out within a stipulated deadline, the corporation will execute the repairs and deduct the cost from the contractor’s payments.
In contrast,188 roads stretching 552 km have completed their DLP. Of these, 126 roads covering 435 km are in good condition,while the remaining 62 roads (116 km) are not.
Officials have been instructed to undertake repair works and pothole filling on the roads in poor condition under the respective city corporation limits.
*Enforce Proper AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) Work:
To maintain clean and functional roads, contractors handling annual maintenance contracts must be held accountable.
Officials have been instructed to ensure the cleanliness of footpaths,replacement of broken slabs,cleaning of shoulder drains,installation of gratings,and overall sanitation,with proper supervision in place.
*Hold Meetings to Resolve Road Issues:
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of maintaining roads in good condition.Each city corporation office must conduct meetings with relevant officials and contractors to address road-related issues and complete ongoing works within specified timelines.
*Accelerate Work on High-Density Corridors:
Work is in progress on 11 high-density corridors spanning 46 km. Officials have been directed to resolve local issues and accelerate work to ensure early completion.Measures must be taken to ensure these roads are free from potholes.
*Issue Notices for Unclean Conditions and Waste Dumping:
Metro construction areas must be cleaned and cleared of debris by the Metro authorities.If cleanliness or waste removal is not carried out,officials have been instructed to identify such instances and issue formal notices to the responsible departments for immediate action.
*Development of Centralized Road Management Software:
A centralized software system has been developed to track all road-related data, including pothole locations, ongoing projects,contractors involved, and more. Officials were also instructed to update the system with their contact information and mobile numbers for effective coordination.
