: Data on nuclear weapons 1,000 times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki has been leaked. Usually, the movements of nuclear submarines are highly secretive in the defense forces. In a way, even the crew members themselves do not know where they are going until the last minute. However, the details of the nuclear submarine base have been leaked. There are four submarines there, each with 16 nuclear missiles. A fitness tracking app is the reason for this whole affair.

The location details of a French nuclear submarine, including crew and officer data, have been accidentally leaked. The submarine was originally scheduled to patrol near Russia. If these details reach Moscow, France is worried about the submarine’s condition.

The Strava app, which is used on mobile phones and smartwatches, is at the root of all this chaos. It tracks and monitors users’ fitness activities. It identifies where they are with great accuracy. It has recently identified a French submarine base called Long Island in Brest Harbor. The four submarines here can launch a total of 64 nuclear missiles. These are called black boats. Since 1972, one of the submarines here has always been on patrol. At that time, if there was a nuclear attack on the country, it would be waiting in a secret place until it could respond immediately on the orders of the president.

A total of 2,000 military personnel work at the Long Island base. This is the top secret military zone in France. Even smartphones are not allowed here. If they are brought, they are switched off and put in signal-proof lockers. However, some personnel have started using smart watches that use third-party apps to check physical activity. The French Ministry of Defense was alerted after the data collected by this was leaked. It has started an investigation into about 400 personnel who have been using the Strava app for the last ten years. This was stated in an article by the Daily Mail of the UK.

Even things that traveled in a submarine..

According to a report by the French newspaper Le Monde, the staff working here were found to have been very negligent in registering on the app with their real names. Moreover, their profiles were kept public. It was found that one officer went jogging in the areas where nuclear submarines are located 16 times. He recorded his location and time during that time. After that, his activities on the app stopped for two months. Then they started again. While chatting on it, he said that he had been in a ‘bio-waste box’ (referring to a submarine) for two months. In addition, he shared images of scuba diving.

The French newspaper reported that the same Strava app is also used by the bodyguards of the presidents of the United States, Russia, and France. This means that the details of the movements and trips of the respective presidents are also being recorded on the app.
