Kherson, Brussels: Five people have died so far due to the Nova Kakhivka dam accident in Ukraine, the mayor of Nova Kakhivka, appointed by Russia, Lentiev said on Thursday. It has been revealed that the whereabouts of two more missing persons have been found. On the other hand, President Zelensky visited the western part of the dam under the control of Ukraine. He stated that he has examined the assistance being provided to the people there and assessed the damage caused to the environment due to this accident. He also mentioned the issue of providing compensation to the victims. A local official said that on Thursday morning, there was heavy water in the surrounding areas of the dam and an area of 600 square kilometers was completely submerged. About 60 thousand people have been displaced from their homes due to this disaster. French President Emmanuel Macron reacted to this incident. He tweeted that this is a deadly attack. He said that 5 lakh water purification tablets, machines and kits are being sent to the people of Ukraine immediately. On the other hand, Russia’s ally Belarus accused the Ukrainian army of attacking the Kakhovka Dam.

* Ukrainian officials said on Thursday that Russian forces launched an attack on a city that was submerged due to a dam failure. It was explained that the aid programs had to be stopped for a few hours and these attacks took place after the arrival and departure of President Zelensky. Eight people were said to have been injured in the attacks.

* The European Union (EU) on Thursday launched legal proceedings over a controversial law introduced by Poland. While the nationalist government in Poland says that this law is meant to counter Russia’s influence, criticism is pouring in that it is intended to persecute the opposition. Reacting to this, the EU said, “The new law gives scope for unnecessary interference in democratic processes. It violates the principles of democracy and the right to effective legal protection. To this extent, the EU has issued a notice to Poland and asked it to respond within 21 days on the issues mentioned therein. After that, there are chances of heavy fines if found not to act according to the EU rules.

Beat the Crimea case: Russia

Russia has asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to dismiss Ukraine’s petition against it over the annexation of Crimea. The Russian Ambassador to the Netherlands told the ICJ that the allegations have no legitimacy and at least they do not have any evidence to support them. On the other hand, the representatives of Ukraine argued that Russia started its propaganda when the trial at the ICJ started. While the arguments in this case will end in another week, it will take a few more months for the verdict to come out.
