Dr Alok Mohan appointed as Karnataka DGP

W ith the Present head of the Karnataka police force is going on central deputation on Monday,the state government given additional charges to senior most IPS officer,Dr.Alok Mohan as the Director General and Inspector General of police from Monday until further orders .

Mr. Alok Mohan is presently serving as Director General of Fire and emergency services,Commandant General of home guards and civil defence and head of special disaster response force .

Apart from DG and IGP,Mr.Mohan has also been given charge of chairman,Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation.

Dr.Alok Mohan joined IPS in 1987 at an early age of 22 years.He is presently DGP for the Departments of Fire and Emergency Services,Home Guards and Civil Defence and the State Disaster Response Force.

He has a glorious record of serving in various challenging and critical assignments at the State, National and International levels during his 36 years of Police Service.

Dr.Alok Mohan is an alumnus of IIT, Roorkie and Harvard University,USA.He holds degrees of M.Sc (Hons),M.Phil. and MPM (Master in Public Management).

He has a Doctorate (Ph.D) in the domain of India’s Internal Security.He has attended ‘Executive Management Programmes’ at various Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs).

Dr.Alok Mohan has been awarded with many prestigious national and international medals for his outstanding services which include the President Police Medal for ‘Distinguished Service’ and President Police Medal for ‘Meritorious Service’.

While serving as a Commander of the International Police Task Force (ITPF) in Bosnia-Herzgovina, he was awarded with the ‘UN Peace Medal’ for his outstanding contribution in the United Nations Peace Keeping Operations.

Dr.Alok Mohan,while serving previously as the Director General of Police for the ‘Prisons and Correctional Services Department’, is credited for bringing transformational changes in the Prison administration through ‘Navachetana’ program – an initiative to enhance the mental, physical,and emotional well-being of over 15,000 prisoners in 53 prisons across the state.

As ADGP, Dr.Alok Mohan has headed the Law and Order, Administration, Internal Security and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the State.

As ADGP, Law and Order, he has ensured maintenance of efficient and effective law and order in the State.

While working as the IGP for the Western Range, Mangalore he is credited with introduction of various people-friendly policing measures in the coastal districts of Karnataka.

It was during his tenure as DIGP at the State CID,when the first ever Cyber Crime Police Station for the nation was started.

He has also served as the Assistant Inspector General of Police at the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Headquarters, New Delhi.

Mr.Praveen Sood has been selected as the director of CBI on Deputation for a period of two years and will be relieved from the state government to take up the central assignment.

Mr. Mohan has been given the additional responsibility until the completion of the formalities which may take some time.

As per the procedure the state government had to prepare a recommendation list of all the DGPs and send it to the UPSC .

The UPSC panel select the three senior most officers and send it back to the state government to choose one among them.

Though this process takes some time,the state government usually sent the list one month in advance at least.

However since the appointment of Sood was sudden, the state government did not have the time and hence this is the ad hoc arrangement until all the formalities are completed,sources said.
